Exciseman in Yorkshire; visited York with Ralph Thoresby (FRS 1697) (1719); Somerset Herald (1720); owned many rare manuscripts and printed books, some of which were destroyed by fire, and others he sold to Humfrey Wanley (FRS 1706) for the Earl of Oxford's library; the remainder were sold at auction after his death; published a number of county maps, with the coats of arms of the nobility and gentry who had subscribed to them
